Seven years ago, our Roger went on
a walkabout. Unlike the quest of the Aboriginal
Aussie, Roger sought his inspiration here in the
desert Southwest.
Roger Carpenter, who hails from
Sydney, Australia, brought with him his experience
as a master wine sommelier, chef, and Sydney food
critic. He set up shop in Chandler. The store,
named the Red Kangaroo after the mythical Aussie
marsupial, soon added a tasting bar and
nibbles.
Enter Phil Roberts, noted organic
dairyman and entrepreneur. Looking to trade his
knowledge of one beverage for another, Phil joined
the party in 2007. He cut a hole in the wall,
built a kitchen, and hired a chef. The result was
award-winning Crocodile Potstickers, the first
Barbeque Kangaroo in the Southwest (they are the
largest importers of kangaroo in America!) and the
name change to Down Under.
The result is an exotic combination
of Australian-Asian Fusion food found nowhere
else! This is not your outback steak restaurant --
leave that for the timid and bereft of palate. The
result is a neighborhood Aussie wine bar with an
eye to the eclectic.
We have the largest selection of
Australian wine in the Southwest, tastes that pop
in your mouth, guarantee to excite
you.
Roger and Phil will pair food to
wine, or wine to food. Whether it is Kangaroo
Salad, Beef Satay with a mushroom merlot reduction
sauce, or Ostrich Sliders, you will be hooked on
the friendly neighborhood wine
bar.
With regular visits from noted wine
makers from around the world, celebrity wine
tastings with the likes of Luis Gonzalez and Dave
Pratt. Weekly music provided by Eye Talk who
played Down Under, and a variety of wandering
minstrels, you will never be anything but
entertained.
Great Times / Great Personalities,
with a touch of Aussie hospitality here in the
valley.
